Comparative analysis of the diet composition and its relation to morphological characteristics in Achirus mazatlanus and Syacium ovale (Pleuronectiformes: Osteichthyes) from a Mexican Pacific coastal lagoon Neotropical Ichthyology
Padilla-Gutierrez,Sandra Carolina; González-Sansón,Gaspar; Aguilar-Betancourt,Consuelo María; Flores-Ortega,Juan Ramón.
ABSTRACT The purpose of this research was to investigate differences in diet composition between Achirus mazatlanus and Syacium ovale, two flatfishes inhabiting in a tropical coastal lagoon and to investigate the relationship of their feeding habits to size, body morphometry and mouths characteristics. Fish were collected during sampling trips conducted regularly from 2011 to 2016 using several types of fishing gear. Total number of analyzed stomachs with some food content was 328 for Achirus mazatlanus from 1.4 to 21.3 cm total length (TL) and 203 for Syacium ovale with 1.3 to 24.0 cm TL. Results indicate that both species share a general diet based on benthic invertebrates and fishes but S. ovale has a more piscivorous habit, which can be explained by a...

Composição das populações de linguados (Osteichthyes, Pleuronectiformes) da Baía de Sepetiba, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Zoologia
Mendonça,Pablo; Araújo,Francisco Gerson.
Bi-monthly otter trawl sampling programme using a stratified random design was carried out at Sepetiba Bay (22º54'-23º04'S; 43º34'-44º10'W), from August 1994 to July 1996, aiming to assess the flatfish species composition and their relative abundance. Fourteen species in eight genera, four families and one suborder were identified. Paralichthyidae is the most diverse and abundant family, contributing to 70% of total number of individuals and to 58,8% of total biomass, being comprised of nine species: Etropus crossotus (Jordan & Gilbert, 1882); E. longimanus (Norman, 1933); Citharichthys spilopterus (Günther, 1862); C. arenaceus (Evermann & Marsh, 1902); C. macrops (Dresel, 1889); Paralichthys orbignyanus (Valenciennes, 1847); P....

Ecologie du système hôte - parasite, juvéniles G0 de sole (Solea solea) - métacercaires de Digènes : dynamique et effets de l'infestation ArchiMer
Durieux, Eric.
Coastal areas, such as shallow water bays and estuaries, serve as nurseries for juveniles of many marine fishes and especially flatfishes. Parasites play an important role in these marine ecosystems, but it remains poorly studied. Little attention has been paid to parasitism as a potential factor of variation in flatfish juveniles biological performances in these habitats. Sole juveniles, Solea solea (Pleuronectiformes, Soleidae), that is a species of primary importance for fisheries, are infected by digenean metacercariae. Thus, the aims of this PhD thesis were: i) to determine the spatio-temporal dynamics of the digenean metacercariae infection of 0-group sole juveniles at different scales; ii) to estimate the effects of this infection at different...

Indicadores reprodutivos das espécies de Citharichthys Bleeker (Teleostei, Pleuronectiformes) na Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Chaves,Paulo de Tarso C; Vendel,Ana Lúcia.
The species of Citharichthys Bleeker, 1862, C. arenaceus Evermann & Marsh, 1900 and C. spilopterus Günther, 1862, are the most common flatfishes found in Guaratuba Bay, south Brazil. Different size categories of these flatfish occur in the mangrove area throughout the year. The Gonadosomatic Index, the Condition Factor, and the morphological analyses of the gonads from samples obtained between 1994 and 1996 reveals a spawning activity during late Spring and early Summer. This period coincides with the increase in temperature and decrease in salinity. Spawning evidence and the presence of ali size categories throughout the year indicate that Citharichthys spp. are permanent inhabitants of the mangrove in Guaratuba Bay, where they complete their life...

NPY and sbGnRH gene expression in juvenile and adult male Brazilian flounder Paralichthys orbignyanus Ciência Rural
Campos,Vinicius Farias; Collares,Tiago Veiras; Seixas,Fabiana Kömmling; Deschamps,João Carlos; Marins,Luis Fernando Fernandes; Okamoto,Marcelo Hideo; Sampaio,Luís André Nassr; Robaldo,Ricardo Berteaux.
The objective of this study was to evaluate neuropeptide Y (NPY) and sea bream gonadotropin-release hormone (sbGnRH) gene expression in juvenile and adult males of Brazilian flounder. Hypothalamuses from fish were sampled for total RNA extraction. After cDNA synthesis, real-time PCR was used to measure gene expression. NPY showed approximately 2-fold increases in their mRNA levels while sbGnRH showed 3-fold increases in adult fish. These results suggest that these peptides could be involved on hypothalamic regulation of Brazilian flounder sexual maturation.

Spatial and temporal variations of fish assemblages in a shallow Mediterranean soft-bottom area (Gulf of Fos, France) ArchiMer
Letourneur, Y; Darnaude, A; Salen-picard, C; Harmelin-vivien, M.
The fish assemblages of two shallow soft-bottom areas located in the Gulf of Fos (NW Mediterranean) were studied by means of 57 trawl surveys carried out on both seasonal and diel scales between 1983 and 1985. A total of 47 fish species was recorded, with a mean density and biomass of 650 individuals ha(-1) and 2.67 kg ha(-1), respectively. Most of the fluctuations observed were on the spatial scale. Strong differences in fish assemblages were observed between the two areas, with both higher species richness and biomass in the outer part of the gulf (La Gracieuse), while a higher density of individuals characterised its inner part (Bay of Carteau). This spatial pattern was due to a small number of species, such as the gobiids Gobius niger and Pomatoschitus...
